A league of its own

I see. Rules and regulations, how does it go in the league?

Steven : During the league matches, you can’t give a walkover in the no.1 position. If your no.1 player is not there, the no.2 must move up, and so does the rest of the team....accordingly. You can give a walkover at the no.4 position. For example, if the no.2, 3 and 4 player has played, and the no.1 player didn’t turn up to play that day, the whole team will be disqualified. The team captains must submit the names, the line up of the team, half an hour before the games start.

Oh, and what happens if a team submits themself in a weaker division for a better chance to win? Won’t that be unfair?

Steven : Correct. That’s why there is a manager’s meeting one week before the tournament. The draws and listings are out by then......so when all the managers look at the player’s name, and if they find that the team is too strong for that particular division, they will voice it out. From there, the tournament directors will decide. They will look at the team list, and then check with the other team managers. If the other team managers agree, the team considered, will be upgraded. There are cases where when upgraded, the team pulls out.

Who’s the tournament director?
Steven : The tournament director is the organiser, Y.C. Soong. The organiser will be there to brief all the managers; rules and regulations of the league games......what to do and what not to do. So, if at all there’s any complaint, they’ll have to bring it out at the meeting.

Ha......a question frequently asked by players......any plans to increase the prize money?

Steven : Of course there are people saying about the prize money being so little and all. Honestly, to us, we feel that this is not about the money......it’s more for socialising like I said earlier; a get together for club members. If we come up with more funds, we intend to have a Division Five, instead of putting additional money in all four divisions. That’s to enable those in the lower level to join the game.

Yah......for sure, but won’t the league be more prestige if the prize money increases?

Steven :

In a way yes, but when people participate for the money, firstly, the game won’t be so fun anymore and secondly, when it comes to refereeing, there’ll be a lot of problems. As everybody wants to win, the decisions sometimes go unfair, they put themself in weaker divisions......it becomes over competitive. We don’t want them arguing in the court over little things.

Who actually does the refereeing?

Steven:

The players themselves will referee and mark. After the matches of the day are over, the winning team will fax the results to the tournament director.

Hey, any comical thing happened during the league matches?

Steven: Ah......in a game, as an experienced squash player, you’ll know when to ask for a let and when not to. But in this type of club level, instead of asking or appealing for one, some of them actually TELL the referee that it’s a let like, “Let, this is a let!” or “Hey, this is a stroke!”. This sort of reaction, you know. In fact, I encountered this with my own team while I was watching one of them play! He wanted to ask for a let, but instead he shouted at the referee, “Hey, let la!!”. They ask in a way that as though the referee MUST give them one! It looked funny from the outside.

Haha. I’ve seen that happening before! Suits the objective of the league then. Will there be a KL League next year?

Steven:

Yes! Why not?! I think as long as the sponsor is there, the KL League will be there.

One word to describe the SYSPOR KL League, like the British Open - priestige, what would it be?

Steven:

Socialising.

Thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoyed the pie!

Steven: I did!
