Low Wee Nee

Yes, she’s pretty, a sweet little thing, in sports……but she wins! Hoorah!! She looked tired when I met her in Astaka Squash Courts, Selangor, as she just finished her finals of the junior circuit. Fortunately, she’s pleasant and agreed to sit with me for a chat. Winning circuit titles in an age group wayyyy beyond her age, 11 year old Wee Nee’s definitely a player to watch in the future. A student of Sri Pelita, Penang, I personally think Malaysia squash needs more upcoming juniors like her.

When did you start squash?

Wee Nee : Umm…seven? Yeah, seven +.

Oh, the ++. Who told you about squash?

Wee Nee : My sister’s friend. She asked us whether we were interested in squash. Then my sister went for training, and I felt interested to play, and……I played!!

So, how do you like the junior circuits?

Wee Nee : Fine. Quite fun. We get to go shopping, and also eat a lot!

Haha, Sergeant Allan likes that too……is this circuit title your first win?

Wee Nee : : No, I won the Under-13 twice last year, and the Under-15 twice also. This is the second one.

What did you feel after winning?

Wee Nee : Happy!

Well congratulations! You’re 11 right? So, why are you not playing in the Under-13’s??

Wee Nee : Err…I was pushed up to the Under-15 because all the Under-15 girls were pushed up to Under-17. Yeah.

What about the Penang Junior Open in May? Will you be participating?

Wee Nee : Yeah, but not sure if it’s Under-15. I won the Under-11 last year. I beat a girl from Selangor.

Well done! Hey, did you have to miss school for this trip?

Wee Nee : No, but sometimes we have to.

What if you have to? How do you cope with that?

Wee Nee : I have tuition classes on Tuesday and Thursday.
