After a couple of traffic violations, I managed
to meet Sharon, my team mate and friend, on time......thankfully,
in one piece! As she had only 30 minutes to spare, I began our
question and answer session even while walking towards the
wushu hall of the MSN complex. A
graduate of Universiti Putra Malaysia in Bachelor of
Administration, Sharon worked with an accounting firm, Arthur
Andersen, for two months before opting to be a full-time athlete
in late December, 2000. An amiable and funny person in character,
conversations with Sharon often leaves me with face cramps from
laughing too hard! As the last trip to Amsterdam last year has
benefited her game and improved her rankings, she will be going
there again this Friday, indeed more focused and ambitious than
before, for a training stint and some league matches. Elected
‘Player of the Month’ of March, Sharon tells us about Amsterdam,
the infamous sin city of Europe! |
| |
Wow, Shaz! Player
of the month! How do you feel? |
Sharon: |
I'm
happy and, umm.......honoured!! |
| |
| |
Good for you! So,
Amsterdam.....what's it like there? |
Sharon: |
Well,
the people are friendly and helpful. They speak Dutch, but most of
them can speak English, so it’s not a problem to communicate.
Environment wise.......there’s two sides of it, actually. Of course,
the city itself is very busy, the night life there is nonstop, with
the pubs and everything. It’s a great destination for young people to
go. But at the village area, it’s soooo peaceful......windmills and
lots of tulips! |
| |
| |
| |
Really?? Sounds
like an interesting place! What about the weather? |
Sharon: |
Weather's four season there. It’s not difficult to adapt to. Although,
it didn’t snow last year, it was still |
| |
cold. |
| |
Oh, what about
your accommodation? Are you staying in a
hotel or something? |
Sharon: |
Nah, not a hotel. I’m staying with Liz
Irving (her coach in Amsterdam), for a while, but when Nicol |
| |
comes, maybe she’ll stay there also. I’m
not sure, but we’re trying to work something out, |
| |
depending on the budget......apartment of our own maybe, or something
like that. |
| |
But why
Amsterdam, and not some other country for training? |
Sharon: |
We were looking for a centre to train. Of
course, there’s other places like London and Australia, but |
| |
the girls in London are scattered, they don’t really have a
centre. In Amsterdam, they have |
| |
an academy and some good players. Also, we know the coach, so it’s
easier to sort out arrangements. |
