AirAsia 12th Asian Squash Championships

Previous Day

Asian Championship Diary, 2004.

~ My roommate, Nicol and I ~

WE WON! We beat Hong Kong. I won my match against Annie Au while Nicol beat Rebecca Chiu. So again, Sharon did not have to play. The team was exhilarated and had a small celebration by having McDonalds. After us was the men’s unfortunate lost to Pakistan. Azlan had to play the decider, which was an intense and chaotic one. His opponent played nasty and dirty squash, which led to numerous bad calls from the ref. Despite Azlan’s display of fine squash under immense pressure, luck was on the Pakistani’s side and they ‘beat’ us 2-1. All of us including the crowd were devastated.

9.30a.m :

The team’s last breakfast. Not so much laughs this morning. I think we were a bit edgy and in our own thoughts as finals would be on soon.

12.30p.m :

Went to squash center for a light hit at the glass court. Got Ronald to stretch me a bit. He rubbed some kind of lotion on my glutes, which left my bum feeling very warm. At that point, I literally had hot ass!

2p.m :

Played Hong Kong. Followed by hugs and congrats wishes from many.

4p.m :

Men’s bad luck. Kenneth pulled a surprise, and so did Beng Hee’s opponent, Mansoor.

7.45p.m :

At this point of Azlan’s match, the crowd was boo-ing the ref. Some were pretty rude. Even Nicol and I got annoyed at them. Ref told audience that they could leave if they were not satisfied with his calls. Quite dramatic.

The final diary is dedicated to the best roommate in the world, a superb gurlfren, and also the 12th Asians Champ, Miss Nicol David..

10p.m :

Closing dinner. Attire : Smart/Casual. Some came with their team blazers. I was disappointed with the preparation of the event. Food was tasty, but buffet style made it inapt to magnitude of occasion. Decoration? Goodness…it was SO corny x10. Looked cheap and old-fashioned. Seriously, there were even multi coloured balloons arched on the entrance! What were they thinking?!?

11.30p.m :

We went to Passion for victory celebration with some of the participants. Everyone lounged, drank and chat. Lots of laughs here. We were relaxed and had fun.

1a.m :

Some were tipsy. Saw goodie-goodie Rebecca danced for the first time! Haha…somebody poured water on Nicol. Her hair and blouse were drenched!

3a.m : Team’s last supper at mamak before returning to hotel. Our friends bunked-in. Room was heavily zZzzZz-ed.

The Championship is officially over. Where pictures and memories are most people’s style of reminiscing the Asians, for Nicol and I, it’ll be in our conversation in every future Starbucks meeting. Cheers to more jokes and laughs everybody!!
