| The individual and team
events of the Asian Squash Championship will be held in
June. A chance for many to have the honours of representing the country, an open-selection was held last
week for players to vie for the 3rd and 4th spot
of both teams. The 1st and 2nd spots of the teams
have been allotted to our top players; Beng Hee, Azlan, Nicol and
Sharon. Question is…would a
close-selection have been better for the 3rd and 4th
spots? Where everyone and anyone are entitled to play in an
open-selection, only a few players selected by the association, based on
their previous or current performance and commitment to training, are
allowed in a close-selection.
Actually, this method seems
more reasonable to full-time players as they are the ones working their
ass off, they should be given higher chances of making it to the teams
rather than high level recreational players who were once in the scene.
Hard work pays, so when it doesn’t, it could be very frustrating to lose
to players who have contributed less. But if players are aware of a
higher opportunity to be in a team, would that leave them in a comfort
zone that may lead to less effort in training? Or boost them to do well
further?
We must not forget that winning
is everything, especially in sports. Well, for most people…it is THE
ONLY THING. So obviously, the best way to go for the gold is to put the
best players forward, which can be determined in an open-selection.
Moreover, it is a fair trial if everyone is given equal opportunities.
However, if an ex-national player made it, can they be at their peak
again during competition? Or would they treat competition as a trivial
event?
When it comes to team events,
what should be the factors to determine who is allowed to play? Why
them? Is there a better way beside the mentioned manner of trials?
